I am a big fan of Frank Herbert's "Dune" Series. I was thrilled with the Dune: Part One movie when it came out, but thought it might be fun to illustrate some of the characters and designs as I had seen them in my head.
Barony, Geidi prime. This is the homeworld of the antagonist house of the Harkonnens, led by the tyrannical and cunning Baron Harkonnen. It is the capital city and symbol of their oppression as a slave-run civilization built on the backbreaking labor of those without power. In the center of this city stands a mountainous and dark castle sculpted perfectly into a rectangle, forcing slaves to look up at their looming masters. The wealthy and therefore powerful members of the Harkonnen society live here in this monument soaring 900 stories without access to the ground level.
I chose to portray this city as I had imagined it, a musty and factory-like hobble of millions of buildings buried in the shadows of the monument. Smoke is always on the rise and ashes are always snowing down. Even in the beauty of a sunrise their is a sinister sickness that infects the atmosphere and the green hypnotic lights of the city promote fear and misery.
