Vocation is a novel I wrote that begins in the aftermath of a horrific atrocity. Four priests were chained in a cellar beneath the Massachusetts woods in bleak midwinter. Father Christopher is the presumed sole survivor, with two other priests dead, and one having vanished completely.
The story navigates Christopher's recovery, or lack thereof, as he leaves the Catholic Church and its corruption to start his own religion, unencumbered by institution. The aesthetics of the story juxtapose from a gothic northeastern religion to a 60s summer cult vibe.
I enjoy these aesthetics in the story and wanted to navigate them visually as I try and pitch to literary agents. So, I started with character portraits of the main cast, trying to capture their characteristics as best as I can express them. It turned into a study I was proud of and some decent portraiture, so I am sharing here.
